HealthJoy’s first benchmarking report is released at a time of considerable uncertainty for human resources departments around the country. The survey that informed this report ran in July, while HR professionals were planning for open enrollment and mired in challenges related to the pandemic. It focused on forward-looking questions in an effort to identify problems and solutions for the 2021 plan year.
The report is available to download today, and HealthJoy CEO Justin Holland will host a webinar presenting findings and additional insights on Sept. 30.

The State of the Benefits Experience Survey uncovered that:
- Eighty-nine percent of those surveyed reported placing more emphasis on virtual care as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic
- HR pros surveyed spend an average of 9 hours per week answering employee benefits questions
- Fifty-nine percent of those surveyed listed “creating better healthcare consumers” as their primary cost-containment strategy for 2021, but the same number reported they don’t offer a solution to make it easier for employees to shop for care
- Eighty percent of companies won’t expand or reduce their benefits offerings next year
“The upcoming plan year will look like nothing we’ve seen before, and employees need more help than ever,” Holland said. “Taking the pulse of the benefits experience at this juncture reveals exactly what HR is juggling in this unusual time. We hope this contribution helps our industry understand problems and innovate solutions that continue to put the employee experience first.”
