Utilities firms are hiring as the global economy recovers. But employers need to be sure they are hiring the right people to help navigate the change ahead. Questionmark, the online assessment provider, is encouraging employers to assess staff before deciding to hire them, to ensure recruits have the skills to hit the ground running.

Data from payroll services firm ADP shows the US trade, transportation and utilities sector added 155,000 jobs in April alone.1 In the UK, the Office for National Statistics reported 607,000 job vacancies this year where “many were in the provision of utilities”.2

Employers recognize that the skills they need to recruit for are changing. Digital acceleration, changing customer expectations and clean energy is “driving the need for innovation, adaptability and new skills in the workforce”, according to the US Centre for Energy Workforce Development.3 Firms that do not hire the right people will struggle to keep pace with their competitors.

But, despite recognizing the need for new talents, hirers need recruitment processes that help diversify skills and drive innovation across the firm. Employers need people who can bring something new.
