XShift AI Expands AI Copilot and Autopilot for AI-Native Employee Shift Scheduling

New Copilot release edits published shifts and runs multi-step instructions by chat, while Autopilot enforces plain-English scheduling rules around the clock.

XShift AI, an Atlanta-based maker of AI employee scheduling software for shift-based businesses, today announced an expanded release of its AI Copilot, the conversational assistant that builds and changes work schedules from plain-English instructions, alongside its Autopilot system, which enforces a manager’s written rules around the clock. The company positions the two systems together as AI-native employee shift scheduling software: a platform where the AI carries out the scheduling actions itself rather than helping a manager click through menus.

The AI is how you run the schedule, and the rules run themselves. That is what we mean by AI-native employee scheduling software.”

What is new in the AI Copilot

The September 2026 release adds the ability to change and delete shifts that already exist, and to carry out several instructions from a single message. A manager can type “Make Thursday 7 to 3, take Imani off Saturday, and Wednesday needs 4 people,” review one confirmation card showing each change and what it replaces, and approve all three at once. Shifts can be selected the way people talk about them, such as “Rosa’s shifts” or “the understaffed ones,” and the Copilot asks a question when more than one shift fits.

A second addition, “Set it up for me,” lets a new customer paste in a team list or staffing plan in whatever form they already have. The Copilot reads it and shows what it found: people and the jobs each of them does, locations, job roles, staffing requirements by time of day, hours individuals cannot work, and custom policies such as nobody working two weekends in a row. Nothing is created until the manager approves the list on screen.

AI Copilot: every action it takes

The AI scheduling Copilot is powered by GPT-5.2 with function calling, and every action is shown for review before it runs. Its capabilities today:

– Auto-assign every open shift across the organization in one pass
– Generate a complete schedule for a date range using Fair Rotation or Maximize Hours
– Create single shifts, and recurring shifts that repeat daily, weekly, monthly, or every N weeks
– Assign a named employee to a specific shift
– Change the hours, date, headcount, or location of an existing shift, or delete it
– Take a person off a shift, or replace one person with another in a single step
– Approve or deny time-off requests in bulk, filtered by person, date range, type, or length
– Add employees, create locations, and create job roles and staffing rules
– Build an account from pasted text
– Send a direct message to an employee, or post an organization-wide announcement
– Save a week as a template and reapply it later
– Answer questions about the team from the last 30 days of shifts and clock-ins
– Change organization settings by chat
– Carry out several instructions from one message
– Do any of the above by voice instead of typing

Autopilot: rules enforced without a manager

Autopilot is the second AI system inside XShift. A manager writes a rule in plain English, such as “no one works more than 32 hours a week” or “keep Friday-night labor under $600.” Autopilot checks that the names are real people on the team, warns if the rule conflicts with an existing one, and turns it on. From then on the rule is applied every time a schedule is built, a call-out is covered, or someone is added by hand. The Autopilot scheduling software includes:

– Automatic call-out coverage: when a shift opens, Autopilot checks location, role, availability, rest, and custom rules, then either assigns the best-qualified person or offers the shift to everyone qualified, based on a cutoff the manager sets
– Overtime agent: scans the week every 15 minutes, calculates the time-and-a-half cost, and suggests a no-overtime swap for the manager to approve or skip; it never swaps anyone on its own
– Labor-cost rules: a daily, weekly, or per-location cap that blocks any assignment that would exceed it, overtime included
– Time-off automation: plain-English rules that approve or deny requests the moment they are submitted, with each decision stamped with the rule that made it
– Employee pairing rules, weekly hour and per-shift caps, minimum rest between shifts including overnight shifts that cross midnight, weekend rotation limits, and consecutive-day limits counted across every location
– Rule priority ordering, so the highest-ranked rule wins when two conflict
– An Autopilot log recording every action it took on its own

“Most scheduling software added a chatbot on top of the same screens,” said Noah Marbach, founder and CEO of XShift AI. “We built it the other way around. The AI is how you run the schedule, and the rules run themselves. That is what we mean by AI-native, and it is why we describe XShift as the first true AI-native employee scheduling software and the path toward autonomous workforce management.”
