New 15Five Study Shows Managers Don’t Have the Structure to be Effective

Report finds 84% of managers believe they’re giving employees the support they need, yet only 69% of employees agree

15Five, a leading people and performance platform, released the 15Five 2020 Workplace Report, an annual report of the latest workplace trends. The report found three main issues: managers believe they are much better at managing than direct reports do, managers don’t have the right tools, and managers have found it more difficult to perform their job effectively during the pandemic. When not addressed, these issues negatively impact organizations.

“Today, there’s a significant gap between what leaders believe motivates their people and what people actually need to stay motivated,” said Shane Metcalf, Chief Culture Officer of 15Five.

The report’s insights include:

  • 63% of managers are finding it more difficult than usual to perform their job effectively during the pandemic; this feeling increases with responsibility.
  • Only 47% of employees feel their one-on-ones are helpful, compared to 74% of managers.
  • Those with monthly or less frequent one-on-ones are 1.4 times more likely to say they are currently looking for a new job than as those with at least weekly one-on-ones.
  • Direct reports who have one-on-ones at least weekly exhibit more of a growth mindset than those who have less frequent interactions with their managers and are more likely to be constantly striving for personal growth (86% vs. 78%).

“To remain successful, managers must build strong relationships with their direct reports, as that’s actually what can drive engagement, performance, and retention,” said Metcalf. “It’s up to the organization to invest in their managers and provide the right tools for teams to succeed. 15Five’s holistic solution instills the day-to-day habits that ultimately create highly-engaged and high-performing organizations.”
