Indeed Celebrates 20 Years of Helping People Get Jobs

Frost & Sullivan Names Indeed the Most Innovative Matching and Hiring Platform

Indeed, the world’s #1 job site2 and a leading job matching and hiring platform, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month, marking two decades of helping people get jobs and empowering employers to hire top talent efficiently. Since its founding in 2004, Indeed has grown from a job search engine into the most innovative matching and hiring platform globally, as recognized by analyst firm Frost & Sullivan.

“Our mission at Indeed – to help all people get jobs – is driven by a deeper purpose. Outside of family and health, a job is one of the most important things in a person’s life. Work provides the foundation to support and care for our families and communities,” said Indeed CEO Chris Hyams. “We know that better work leads to better lives, and delivering on our mission fuels the work that we do at Indeed each and every day.”

A Two-Decade Journey of Innovation

Over the past two decades, Indeed has revolutionized how people search for and find jobs. When Indeed first launched, it focused on putting the job seeker first by transforming the classified ads model into a search engine for jobs that aggregated jobs from thousands of job boards, career sites, agencies, and newspapers. Over the years, Indeed evolved from a search engine to an AI-powered two-sided marketplace operating in more than 60 countries and 28 languages. In 2012, Indeed was acquired by Recruit Holdings, a global leader in HR technology and business solutions, which has helped to further fuel the company’s worldwide growth.

Today, more people find jobs on Indeed than anywhere else. With over 580 million job seeker Profiles3 and more than 3.5 million employers, 23 job seekers are hired per minute on Indeed around the world.

“Indeed’s scale is made possible by the power of AI, which is transforming how we connect job seekers with employers,” said Indeed EVP of Marketplace Product & UX, Raj Mukherjee. “Every job posting, application, and hire on Indeed feeds our AI matching engine – enabling us to better match talent to the right role and offer personalized recommendations to job seekers before they even begin searching.”

Combining its vast data with the power of AI, Indeed continues to deliver innovative products that connect job seekers and employers in powerful ways.

“Our mission at Indeed – to help all people get jobs – is driven by a deeper purpose. Work provides the foundation to support and care for our families and communities,” said Indeed CEO Chris Hyams. “Delivering on our mission fuels the work that we do.”

Some notable innovations Indeed launched in recent years include:

  • Smart SourcingIndeed’s Smart Sourcing is an AI-driven suite of tools that helps employers tap into a large, active talent pool. On average, Smart Sourcing saves employers about 6 hours per week on recruiting tasks—almost equivalent to a full workday.4
  • Matched Candidates: Indeed surfaces relevant candidates based on their qualifications and responsiveness, making it easy for employers to invite them to apply. Candidates who receive an invitation are 17 times more likely to apply than those who find the job on their own.5
  • Indeed Apply: To streamline the application process for job seekers, Indeed Apply offers a simplified approach. Employers who use Indeed Apply receive 5 times more completed applications and increase their likelihood of hiring by 2.5 times.6
  • ATS Sync Integrations: Indeed leads the industry with integrations to over 320 applicant tracking systems (ATS) such as Workday and iCIMS, with others like Oracle and SAP SuccessFactors coming soon. These integrations make it easier for employers to manage their job postings and get matched to more quality candidates, and for job seekers to find and apply for jobs.
  • GenAI-powered features: By combining OpenAI’s GPT models with its extensive marketplace data, Indeed delivers personalized job recommendations for job seekers and tailored job descriptions for employers. GPT-powered job recommendations deliver 20% or more started applications and a 13% or more improvement in downstream success such as interviews and hires.7

The Next 20 Years of Innovation

Looking to the future, Indeed is looking at the vast opportunities ahead, expanding its suite of over 100 AI-powered job search and hiring features across its platform to speed up the hiring process and improve matching between job seekers and employers. The company’s depth and breadth of jobs and hiring data, signals and insights will continue to fuel Indeed’s innovation as AI technology matures.

At the Indeed FutureWorks 2024 conference in September, Hyams laid out Indeed’s vision for the future: Through Indeed, every worker in the world will have their own personal talent agent. Using the power of AI, Indeed seeks to help connect people to opportunity and transform the job search experience. Hyams announced that a first step towards that vision is a new AI-powered tool called Pathfinder that analyzes people’s unique skills and interests, and helps them discover new career paths and opportunities they may have never considered. Indeed plans to launch Pathfinder in 2025.

“We believe that AI can help bring everyone the kind of career champion that today is only available to the very few,” said Hyams. “Despite how far we’ve come these past 20 years, we are just getting started. We’ll continue building and innovating to connect people with opportunity and better lives.”

Continuing to Lead the Future of Work

Indeed is also leveraging its leadership, expertise, and data and research to champion a better future of work and create opportunity for all.

Notable programs and initiatives include:

  • Hiring Lab: Indeed’s economic research arm offers real-time insights on global labor market and workforce trends – helping workers and employers stay informed and guiding central banks and global policymakers decision-making in the ever-evolving market.
  • Responsible AI: Indeed built a team and published its Responsible AI principles to guide the company’s approach to using AI to help reduce bias and remove barriers to employment, and to ensure that humans remain at the heart of the hiring process.
  • Rising Voices: A groundbreaking initiative created in partnership with Emmy Award-winning writer, producer and actor, Lena Waithe, and her company, Hillman Grad Productions, and 271 Films, to support and accelerate careers for emerging filmmakers across the U.S.

Indeed is widely recognized for its own best-in-class workplace, reinforcing its commitment to employee wellbeing, innovation, and inclusivity. In addition to receiving a high Work Wellbeing score based on the reviews of thousands of its employees, Indeed has been listed among Forbes’ World’s Best Employers 2024, World’s Top Companies for Women 2024, America’s Best Employers For Diversity 2024, America’s Best Employers For New Grads 2024; as well as Disability Equality Index’s Top Workplace for Disability Inclusion 2024, and Human Rights Campaign’s Best Places to Work for LGBTQ+ Equality 2023.

As Indeed enters its third decade, the company remains focused on making the hiring process faster, simpler and more human. By combining the power of AI with human insight, Indeed continues innovating to deliver on its unwavering mission: to help all people get jobs.
