Tibbs Paving Leads the Way When It Comes to Women in the Paving Industry, Citing Career Opportunities and Advancement
According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, women comprise just 10.9 percent of the construction industry workforce. Determined to change that, Virginia-based Tibbs Paving is encouraging women to seek career opportunities in the pavement industry.
After a year of remote learning during the pandemic, school children are back in the classroom. As a result, millions of women are ready to re-enter the workforce and pursue new career paths. While women comprise just 10.9 percent of the construction industry workforce, Virginia-based Tibbs Paving is determined to change that. Citing career opportunities and advancement, the company is launching an appeal to get more women in the paving industry.
The paving industry may not be top of mind when women search for job openings. Offering good pay and room for advancement, there are opportunities in the office and the field for women and men. Women make valuable contributions to the industry, bringing balance and experience to the workforce. To encourage women to apply their skills to the paving business, Tibbs Paving is highlighting two of their Women in Asphalt.
As Financial Controller of Tibbs Paving, Joanna Spanos oversees Accounting, Human Resources and Office departments. With a B.A. degree in Economics, a background in finance and construction, Joanna took a ten-year pause in her career to raise her two sons. In 2019, she was ready to re-enter the workforce when she read a job posting for an Accounts Payable Specialist position at Tibbs. In 2020, she became Financial Controller for the company. She enjoys being a working mom and Tibbs supports the flexibility for a good work life balance. As her career has advanced, she joined the Women of Asphalt organization to become part of the sisterhood and encourage more women into joining the industry.
