Preparing Students in AI ML Technologies Today for Jobs of the Future

AI ML technologies can change the way schools prepare their students for the future. Teachers, just like corporate trainers and consultants for corporate organizations, strongly support the role of AI ML in education. But, students and their parents feel otherwise. According to a report on the future of jobs, US-based students believe that their schools are not doing enough to prepare them for STEM-related careers. Having a solid foundation in STEM education is critical to the national security, especially when there is so much buzz around emerging technologies such as AI/ML, IoT, Edge computing, Blockchain, Metaverse, and others.

So, what kind of careers are students eyeing in the future?

Biotechnology (26%), AI (25%), and Fintech (22%) take the top spots among students targeting the STEP-related careers. Quantum computing, 5G/6G, and Semiconductors follow in the list. While 33% of students feel their current schools do poorly in preparing them for the future, 40% of students also feel that their schools provide advanced classes related to all-STEM subjects. 61% of Americans (not students) give a negative rating to K12 schools for preparing students for the workplace and future careers. This is largely influenced by their thinking that K12 teachers are not qualified enough to impart education in advanced STEM subjects such as AI ML, Quantum computing, Fintech, 56/6G, and Semiconductors. There’s a clear mandate among teachers too– most agreed that it’s their job to prepare K12 students in technology subjects, but 37% are doing nothing about providing education in the above-mentioned advanced STEM subjects that prepare students for the future.

Top 3 Reasons Americans Want Students to Pursue STEM Subjects

AI ML technologies are critical to the US national security frameworks.

Americans believe STEM expertise could solve pertinent issues related to national security, immigration and climate change. 91% Americans, and 95% teachers, say STEM training is “important” to prepare students for jobs that are connected to these issues of national and global interest.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents from both categories, say STEM training is “very important.”

However, there is a massive gender divide among students in readying up for national security-related careers. 72% of male students would pursue a career in one or more of STEM-related domains, only 52% of female students expressed the same intent in their responses.

ChatGPT Education is the Future of STEM-related Careers

According to the survey conducted by Impact Research, 64% of parents want the teachers and schools to allow ChatGPT and similar technologies for education, while another 28% feel it should be a combined initiative of schools and teachers to actively promote the use of AI in schoolwork. Whether it would work in encouraging students to pursue STEP-related careers can only be found out in the future.

A majority of teachers, students, parents, and US-based voters have a positive outlook towards ChatGPT. Teachers, in particular, have a strong inclination toward ChatGPT capabilities in STEM education. 40% of teachers use ChatGPT at least once a week, with overwhelmingly positive outcomes in their classes. However, 23% of teachers also feel that students could use ChatGPT to cheat. A Nearly half of parents surveyed in the poll (49%) see legitimate use cases of ChatGPT in the existing education curriculum. Apparently, a total of 51% of students feel that ChatGPT has either made no impact on their learning (31%) or they are unsure about the overall impact (21%).
