As AI becomes more accessible and capable, employers are experiencing increasing rates of hiring deception, fraud and impersonation.

As AI becomes more accessible and capable, employers are experiencing increasing rates of hiring deception, fraud and impersonation. In fact, a 2026 Greenhouse report showed that 91% of recruiters and hiring managers have spotted or suspected deceptive candidate behavior and 74% said they are more worried about fake credentials now than last year.

Job seekers are using technology to influence hiring in several deceptive ways, including using AI to feed them answers to questions during live interviews and deepfake software to impersonate another individual. Pre-hire assessments are also at risk for fraud. Remote access software can enable another person to control a candidate’s device to take an assessment on their behalf. And AI chatbots and coding tools can now complete increasingly sophisticated assessment tasks.

In all cases, companies are at greater risk of hiring someone not qualified for the job, or who criminally misrepresented their identity or credentials.

Honorlock combats this problem by giving hiring teams a practical and efficient way to proctor interviews and assessments at scale, with one centralized system to review flagged activity, document outcomes, and keep the hiring process moving. The tools are simple and unintrusive for both candidates and hiring companies.

Built to Stop Fraudulent AI Tactics

Honorlock’s new hiring solutions protect the remote hiring process by:

  • Securing remote interviews: Verifying candidate identity, blocking unauthorized AI and remote access tools and detecting suspicious activity during interviews.
  • Protecting assessments: Preventing proxy participation and unauthorized AI use while securing assessment content and allowing employers to control which workplace tools candidates can access.
  • Giving employers the evidence: Recording session activity and providing timestamped reports and flags so hiring teams can review potential misconduct and make informed decisions.
  • Protecting the candidate experience: Running in the background after identity and workspace verification without unnecessary alerts or interruptions.

“Remote hiring is quickly falling victim to fraudulent candidate activity, allowing job seekers to misrepresent their skills and qualifications. This deception costs companies an enormous amount of time and effort, as well as opening them up to risk,” said Michael Hemlepp, CEO of Honorlock. “Screen sharing alone can’t give employers the monitoring they need, but Honorlock closes the gaps that traditional remote hiring processes leave open, giving employers tools and evidence to stop fraud and hire verified talent without slowing down the process.”
