9 in 10 Hiring Managers Say ChatGPT Experience Can Be More Valuable Than a College Degree

When evaluating job applications, vast majority of hiring managers say ChatGPT experience can be more valuable than a college degree

Intelligent.com, a trusted resource for online degree rankings and higher education planning, has published a recent survey report that examines the relative importance of experience with ChatGPT among entry-level jobs. The report also shares insight on whether companies currently require candidates to have ChatGPT experience. Overall, Intelligent.com researchers analyzed responses from 1,000 hiring managers in the United States.

Based on the results of the survey, 86 percent of hiring managers say having ChatGPT experience can be more valuable than having a college degree, in certain instances. Additionally, 93 percent say ChatGPT experience helps boost recent college graduates’ resumes, and 95 percent say ChatGPT experience is valuable for entry-level candidates to have. Furthermore, 1 in 2 hiring managers surveyed say they are currently hiring for entry-level positions. Among this group, 8 percent say ‘all’ open positions require ChatGPT experience, 48 percent say ‘most,’ 39 percent say ‘some,’ 3 percent say ‘a few,’ and only 2 percent say ‘none.’

“By staying on top of current technological trends and acquiring relevant skills, entry-level job applicants can gain a competitive edge,” says Intelligent.com.

With increasing value placed on ChatGPT experience, 94 percent of hiring managers ‘highly recommend’ or ‘recommend’ that current or future college students take coursework about ChatGPT. Additionally, 91 percent of respondents say it will be more important for entry-level candidates to have ChatGPT experience in 2024 than now.

All data found within this release derives from a survey commissioned by Intelligent.com and conducted online by survey platform Pollfish on April 5, 2023. Overall, 1,000 hiring managers in the United States were surveyed, using a convenience sampling method. Only hiring managers who correctly identified what ChatGPT was were surveyed.
