Jobseekers Weigh In on 100% Remote Jobs: New Survey from Virtual Vocations

New survey results from one of the web’s leading all-remote job boards offer exclusive insight into what jobseekers expect from 100% remote jobs and what they’re looking for as they take the next steps in their remote careers.

Founded in 2007, Virtual Vocations is a family-owned, 100% virtual company that has worked to connect jobseekers with legitimate remote job openings from expert-vetted employers for the last 15 years.

This year, as part of the company’s seventh annual Remote Work Week celebration, Virtual Vocations surveyed more than 540 current and potential jobseekers to learn more about how professionals perceive and define fully virtual roles.

The results of the survey, released Monday, show more and more professionals are seeking out job options that offer them the freedom and flexibility they need to find success and balance at work and at home.

More than 6 in 10 survey respondents (61.64%) said they want to work from home 100% of the time, and roughly 7 in 10 (70.28%) said they want a fully virtual job. Among those who reported being employed at the time of the survey, 1 in 5 cited a lack of remote work options as their top concern within their existing workplace.

For a majority of professionals who would prefer a fully remote job, their primary reasons for wanting to work exclusively from home included:

  • Wanting to save time and money by skipping the commute;
  • Seeing increased productivity while working from home; and
  • Realizing that staying home is better for their personal health and well-being.

Notably, more than two-thirds of respondents (68.07%) indicated they believe the phrase “100% remote” includes jobs that require occasional onsite meetings or retreat travel. Roughly 3 in 10 said 100% remote jobs should never require employees to appear on site.

But it isn’t just in location that jobseekers are looking to maximize flexibility. Nearly half of those polled by Virtual Vocations (45.21%) said they would prefer a four-day, eight-hour work week and felt they could be just as productive in those 32 hours.

According to Virtual Vocations CEO and co-founder Laura Spawn, employers aiming to recruit and retain top talent in 2022 should strive to remove barriers to flexibility and allow their employees to work at the times and places where they work best.

“The results of our survey not only speak to the remote job search preferences and career goals of modern working professionals,” Spawn said, “but also prove workers’ desires to maximize flexibility within their personal and professional lives by cutting their commutes, removing restrictions from their work locations, and even adopting a four-day work week.”
