New Data: Vast Majority of Working Mothers Believe COVID-19 Will Have Long-Lasting Negative Effect on Women’s Career Progress

Inkwell and HeyMama partner to prevent career backslide for working mothers

Inkwell, the leading voice in the flexible work conversation, and HeyMama, a social and professional network for working moms who are growing their careers and families, today release data that finds a whopping 87 percent of women believe women’s collective career progress will be negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic – and that the impact will outlive the virus.

Six months into the global pandemic, the results of a survey of more than 700 working mothers found concern for not only current challenges, but for implications about the future of flexible work long after the pandemic is over. To meet the issues head-on, HeyMama and Inkwell are partnering to provide working mothers with flexible work options that are more compatible with their lives and keep them in the workforce.

“As the pandemic drags on, the way working mothers are being stretched in every direction cannot be ignored,” CEO of Inkwell, Manon DeFelice, said. “These data reflect a dire need for women to have access to work schedules that are more in tune with the disproportionate load we bear in addition to our work; we’re excited to join forces with HeyMama to amplify flexible roles that will better serve working mothers who remain an essential layer in the American workforce.”

Key Findings
Progress is Significantly Stunted: Nearly 3 in 4 women surveyed feel their career progress will be stunted because of the pandemic.

There is No One-Size-Fits-All Solution: Fifty percent of working women say that they’re most productive during traditional working hours, while the other half rely on the other hours to get work done. The weight of childcare and domestic work is falling squarely on the shoulders of working women, and is only growing heavier as the pandemic persists and the virtual school leaves many working women with the task of navigating online learning.

Flexibility is Key to Protecting Progress: Already, nearly 50 percent (49.9 percent) of working mothers say they have considered leaving their current job to find a more flexible role during the pandemic. What’s more, moving forward, flexible work is necessary; fifty percent of working mothers say they will not be able to return to work in the same capacity post-pandemic if their employer does not adopt a long-term flexible work schedule.

By partnering, HeyMama and Inkwell will keep their communities of more than 5,000 professionals updated on the latest flexible job postings, and cross-pollinate resources to cast a wider network of applicants for flexible roles. The community will benefit from creating and reinforcing this network of superwomen, with significant financial incentives for referring and helping women build the workplace and workforce of the future.

“At a time when endless research proves the immeasurable value of a more diverse and representative leadership team, and all levels of corporate life are opening more opportunities, too many women are being squeezed out of the workforce,” Co-founder of HeyMama, Katya Libin, said. “We’re thrilled to team up with Inkwell to offer the best flexible job resources to our community — not only for the women who’ll fill them, but to help create a new standard for a more egalitarian workplace.”

How the Partnership Works:

  • HeyMama will feature a private messaging platform for members powered by Inkwell
  • HeyMama will include an Inkwell job section in their weekly newsletter
  • Inkwell will participate in digital events and speaking opportunities with HeyMama annually
