Unitek 2021 Conference: Co-Creating the Future One Decision at a Time

Unitek hosted their sixth annual conference with Shawn Achor, New York Times bestselling author of The Happiness Advantage and Big Potential, as the keynote speaker and Kathleen Sebelius, former Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services for the Obama Administration. Dr. Tim Bristol ‘Nurse Tim’ also led the event with his expertise on healthcare services and NCLEX-Board prep for nurses. This virtual event focused on the theme of “Co-Creating the Future One Decision at a Time” and the importance of decision-making involved in building interconnected relationships and leadership skills for the future.

“We were honored to host such forward-thinking and inspirational thought leaders like Shawn Achor, Kathleen Sebelius, and Nurse Tim. Together, their ideas bridged the gap between the present and future of healthcare and education,” said Janis Paulson, Chief Executive Officer at Unitek Learning. “At Unitek, we will continue to cultivate new ideas to expand our educational offerings. For us to prepare future healthcare professionals, we must continue to evolve and combine new perspectives, teaching approaches, and cutting-edge technologies.”

Throughout the conference, each speaker answered this question: “The Future Is?” Shawn Achor encouraged listeners to reap the benefit of a happier and more positive mindset so that they can achieve the extraordinary through social connections. “By creating an interconnected approach to happiness and success, we shine brighter together,” said Achor. Secretary Sebelius spoke about the future of the Build Back Better Legislation and educational equity, excellence, and opportunity to prepare a practice-ready healthcare workforce. In a similar vein, Dr. Bristol believes the future will focus on faculty using evidence-based best practices to develop performance-based assessments and meet the challenge of New Essentials for nursing practice.

Unitek’s vice president of online architecture, Beth Bruner, stated that the future involves teachers partnered with instructional designers, elevating course design, building high-quality programs, and advancing educational best practices. Jamie Holcomb, Unitek’s vice president of faculty development and first-year student experiences, delved into the future of healthcare, speaking on the merits of investing in ourselves through extended learning opportunities, professional networks, and unique professional development opportunities to foster collaboration.

“Kathleen and Shawn’s mission is one that Unitek ultimately shares,” said Dr. Abdel Yosef, Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Unitek Learning. “For educators to effectively prepare students, they must infuse their approach with a positive reflection on the past and an eye on the future. Our goal at the conference was to study how positive psychology can transform decision-making in education, the workforce, and beyond.”
