Global workplace authority Great Place to Work has just published its 16th annual ranking of the Best Small and Medium Workplaces, in partnership with Fortune. The list of 150 companies was determined after an analysis of data that was compiled from the results of employee surveys that were collected using Great Place to Work’s Trust Index.
Small and medium-sized businesses have a tremendous influence on the US economy and workforce,” said Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work. “These organizations have found the key not only for winning top talent against their larger competitors, but also for playing a leadership role in dramatically improving the day-to-day experience of US labor conditions by creating great workplaces where everyone can succeed regardless of who they are or what job they perform.”

According to Great Place to Work’s research, as a company increases its headcount, it is critical for leaders to pay attention to three growth readiness indicators.
- People avoid politicking and backstabbing as ways to get things done.
- Promotions go to those who best deserve them.
- Managers avoid playing favorites.
The survey results show that these three employee sentiments change the most as a company scales its people power. By growing too fast, a company can severely damage its culture. By growing too slow, the competition can corner the market. However, outperforming competitors is more than getting there first. Without the right culture, it won’t matter how fast a company gets to the market because it won’t last. The cost of culture is higher than people realize – it’s not only in increases of regrettable turnover but also in significant decreases in revenue and innovation capacity. Once trust is broken in the organization, or if it hasn’t fully formed, with every additional employee, it is exponentially harder – and more costly – to regain that trust.
