The global COVID-19 pandemic forced many professionals to turn to online courses to learn new skills needed to land a job or move up the corporate ladder. However, in the rush to remote learning, many virtual formats lacked the benefits of in-person, hands-on learning. During the pandemic, O’Reilly’s primary goal was to arm its customers with the resources and tools to upskill and reskill within the confines of their own homes.

“Since inception, O’Reilly’s mission has been to change the world by sharing the knowledge of innovators,” said Laura Baldwin, president at O’Reilly. “Rather than viewing the pandemic as a setback, we saw it as an opportunity to rethink the way we do business and, as a result, better serve our customers in a time of great uncertainty and need. I’m incredibly proud of the conscious efforts the team made to guide all aspects of our business—from content delivery to virtual events—to meet the new challenges and demands of a work-from-home environment.”

One of the biggest contributors to O’Reilly’s efforts to meet virtual learning challenges during the pandemic has been its live online training. Introduced in 2016, this expert-guided content is delivered virtually via O’Reilly’s learning platform, enabling participants to ask questions in real time. In 2020 alone, more than one million people registered for its live online training courses. Additionally, pivoting O’Reilly’s conferences from in-person to virtual events helped an even wider audience take advantage of expert talk tracks and content the company has to offer. Today, over 20,000 members have registered for O’Reilly’s 2021 Superstream Series, a collection of virtual conferences featuring expert speakers who deliver talks and training sessions on technology’s most prominent subjects and emerging trends.

To further enable O’Reilly users to continue learning and building skills in the face of adversity, the company also launched O’Reilly Answers, which is designed to help workers solve challenging technical problems quickly with minimal interruption. O’Reilly Answers provides relevant highlights and snippets from O’Reilly’s extensive library of expert content while enabling workers to immediately apply that knowledge to their work.

“Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards in 2021 provide much-needed and well-deserved recognition to organizations that went above and beyond to support their stakeholders during the unprecedented disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Rachel Cooke, Brandon Hall Group chief operating officer and leader of the HCM Excellence Awards Program. “The awards provide validation of best practices in all areas of HCM at a time when they have never been more important to employers, employees, and customers.”

Award entries were evaluated by a panel of veteran, independent senior industry experts, as well as by Brandon Hall Group’s senior analysts and executives. Winners were selected based on the design of the program, its functionality, innovation, and overall measurable benefits.
