ResumeBuilder.com Survey Reveals 100 Percent of Workers With Unlimited PTO Took Fewer Than 10 Days Off Last Year

ResumeBuilder.com, the premier resource for professional resume templates and career advice, has published a recent survey report that evaluates paid time off policies among American corporate workers. The report also shares insight into reasons why workers with unlimited PTO take so few days off. Overall, researchers gathered feedback from 1,351 full-time corporate employees in the United States.

Based on the survey, 5 percent of respondents say they have an unlimited PTO policy, 89 percent say they have a specified amount of PTO every year, and 6 percent say they do not have any PTO. Among workers with unlimited PTO, 100 percent say they took fewer than 10 days off in the past year. Conversely, among workers with specified PTO, only 56 percent say they took fewer than 10 days off last year. The main reason why respondents with unlimited PTO took so little time off is workload, with 62 percent saying their work is ‘really busy.’ Other reasons include ‘afraid of returning to too much work,’ ‘not wanting to appear lazy,’ and ‘unsure of how much time off to take.’

Data also shows that respondents with unlimited PTO are more likely to work on their PTO days. Fifty-six percent of workers with unlimited PTO say they ‘always’ or ‘sometimes’ work on their days off, compared to 42 percent of workers with specified PTO. Although results show that workers with unlimited PTO take fewer days off, 75 percent still say they prefer having unlimited PTO over 20 days of specified PTO. Among workers who do not currently have unlimited PTO, half also say they would prefer an unlimited PTO policy.
